Message from the President

Good afternoon to all Rugby Club members, both Seniors and Juniors, I hope everyone and their families are well and have managed to avoid any adverse health effects of COVID -19. These recent times have been highly eventful and have affected us all at work, at school and at home but unfortunately there has been no Rugby to keep us fit, active and occupied. The latest SRU information issued on Friday 3 July indicates that the earliest we can expect to start playing matches is September for the Juniors and October for the Seniors, yes possibly 3/4 months away!

With the recent announcements issued by Scottish Government and the SRU, I wanted to bring you up to speed on how this affects your Rugby Club and tell you what is happening (or not happening). It was our intention and we were preparing to have the Function Room bar opened and also offer outdoor facilities in line with Scottish Government guidelines. However, unfortunately I have to inform you that the ceiling above the stairwell in the Clubhouse has fallen and although the area has been cleaned up we need to arrange for repairs. We have obtained quotes from contractors and consulted with insurers but the work to repair the ceiling is unlikely to start until mid July and be completed around the beginning of August. We have no option but to keep the Clubhouse closed during this period. We do not have a formal opening date yet but will keep everyone informed and we can reassure you we will open as soon as we possibly can.

During this lockdown period, the SRU have been very active in keeping the clubs informed through email communications and webinars referring to the best guidance for returning to play. Several of you will have followed the SRU information issued. Part of the requirements are for the clubs to appoint a Safety Coordinator and I am really pleased that Stewart Barnett has agreed to take on this role. If you need to know what he will be doing then consult the SRU website, but he will need your assistance on all Covid-19 health and safety aspects so please cooperate.

It is heartening to see both the Senior and Junior playing members have been keeping occupied carrying out virtual training and skills sessions and thanks to all the coaches who have devised these sessions. Following on from the playing season, congratulations are due to all our highly talented Junior rugby teams and the award winning coaches and a special well done to Jack Denton our 1st XV player of the season for some outstanding performances. Although there has been no rugby recently, the Rugby and Sports Club committee have been communicating and meeting regularly to ensure the clubhouse and grounds are checked to hopefully make sure we get an opening day in early August. Funding has been applied for and to date we have been successful in getting our fair share. Jackie’s morning constitutional takes him around the facilities checking the rooms and changing rooms, safety and security. John McLaughlin has prepared an initial Return to Open the Facility document in line with Scottish Government guidelines with Elaine Farry involved in preparing risk assessments. Thanks to all the hard working committee.

The recent SRU Webinar issued on the 3rd July, gave some dates for upgrading our rugby training and hopefully starting games in October although some dates may change. The Clubhouse is there for us all to use and enjoy and I sincerely hope this will be available for us to share in the not too distant future. We are doing everything we can do to open up for you all to enjoy.

Kind regards and stay safe, and enjoy your virtual training,

Yours in Rugby.

Alan Swanson, President Cambuslang Rugby and Sports Club
